Exploring Asian Flavors in Paris: Nonette's Pop-Up Review

If you wanted to taste Asian-style French doughnuts and banh mi, you used to have to go all the way to Paris or visit the Singaporean-founded sandwich deli Nonette.

However, now you can enjoy their popular bites at their pop-up at Rasa Space in Republic Plaza until Oct 4.

This pop-up serves as a testing ground for the team to assess the feasibility of opening a permanent business in Singapore.

AsiaOne recently visited this pop-up, which is the second one following their first-ever pop-up in November 2022, offering an honest review of the experience.

Banh Mi, Donuts, and Bite-sized Snacks

Throughout the three-month pop-up, the menu items will rotate, allowing diners to try something new with each visit.

The Banh Mi Parisiens are a staple, featuring artisanal baguettes toasted to order and filled with ingredients like pickles, cucumbers, fresh herbs, and various proteins.

Among the favorites is the Banh Mi Jambon Beurre ($12), which includes homemade chicken liver pate, char siew, Vietnamese mortadella, jambon, pickles, coriander, chili, and pork floss.

The sandwich is so substantial that it requires two hands to eat, yet the abundance of vegetables and the light baguette texture keep it from feeling heavy.

Another standout is the Vietnamese Fried Chicken Banh Mi ($12), featuring Southeast Asian-spiced fried chicken, pickles, sriracha mayo, coriander, and chili.

For vegetarians, there's the Vegetarian Special Banh Mi ($12) with a sunny-side up egg as the protein.

Nonette offers locally inspired donuts that change every few weeks. One unique option is the Chilli Oil Chantilly Donut ($4), filled with Chantilly creme and coated with chili oil glaze.

There's also the Kaya Donut ($4) filled with silky kaya cream, which has a surprising savory touch from fleur de sel in the filling.

For those who prefer bite-sized snacks, there are eclairs and tarts like the Tau Suan Eclair ($4) and Black Sesame Eclair, each with distinct flavors.

The Singapore Sling Baba ($5) offers a refreshing option, inspired by the local cocktail, featuring a gin-infused cake topped with pineapples and lime salsa.

The Chocolate Tart ($5) stands out as a favorite with a mix of sweet and savory elements, including a hint of fish sauce.

If you want to sample a bit of everything, Nonette's Apero Box ($19++) includes a banh mi, a donut, and two eclairs, available during specific hours on Wednesdays to Saturdays.

Prior to launching Nonette, founder Pearlyn worked in the commodities sector in Europe and identified a need for quality Asian cuisine, leading her to establish The Hood, a bistro in Paris specializing in Southeast Asian food, before opening Nonette in July 2021 amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
